The artificial turf glove durability test

A structured wear test of goalkeeper gloves on artificial turf, with the methodology published before any results exist.

Status: Testing has not yet started. The methodology below is published in advance so results can be judged against it. Results will be added here as each check interval is completed.

Why this test exists

Artificial surfaces are significantly more abrasive than grass. Sand-dressed astro and rubber-crumb 3G/4G pitches grind at glove latex in a way natural turf doesn't, and keepers who train on them get through gloves faster, sometimes much faster. Glove brands know this, which is why so many market "turf-ready" or "durable" models. What almost nobody publishes is actual test data: how many sessions a palm survives, when seams start to go, how quickly grip falls off.

This test is an attempt to produce that data in the open. The methodology below is deliberately specific, and it's published before testing starts so that the results, whatever they turn out to be, can be checked against the plan. If a glove from any brand performs badly, including the one made by the company that funds this site, that result gets published.

Methodology

Gloves under test

Four gloves from four brands. Where a brand makes an astro- or turf-specific model, that model is used; otherwise the brand's flagship is used and noted as such.

All gloves are bought at retail in the same size and used from new. Where a flagship is used instead of an astro-specific glove, it is because the brand had no astro-specific model available to buy when the test set was selected.

Surface

To be confirmed. A single artificial pitch will be used for every session of the test, so that all four gloves wear against the same surface. The pitch type (3G or 4G), infill type and pile height will be documented here once the venue is confirmed. Using one consistent venue matters: mixing surfaces would make wear rates incomparable between gloves.

Test volume and session structure

The planned default is 20 sessions of 60–90 minutes per glove, to be confirmed before testing starts. Each session follows the same standardised drill sequence rather than open play, because match activity varies too much for a fair comparison:

What's measured

Tester

A single tester uses all four gloves throughout the test, rotating gloves across sessions, so differences in technique or handling don't skew results between brands.

A note on who's running this

This site, and this test itself, is funded by ProvenGK, one of the brands being tested. That's disclosed here and on the About page because it's exactly the kind of thing a reader should know when weighing results. The mitigations are the ones described above: methodology published before results, identical protocol for every glove, one tester, one surface, and negative results published regardless of brand.
